Supporting and Standing with Those Recovering from the Maui Wildfires

Updated: Sep 13, 2023

In early August of 2023, Lahaina, a town on the island of Maui, was devastated by climate change-driven wildfires exacerbated by brutal winds off the coast—a harsh reminder of a warming climate’s increasing threats. But, amid the devastation, the island’s communities showcased their remarkable resilience and unity.

As the flames subsided, Lahaina and residents of other islands came together to support those affected. Neighbors helped neighbors, and the community organized relief efforts, providing shelter, food, and essential supplies. From across Hawaii and the mainland, donations large and small poured in to help.

LiquiDonate is proud to have played a small part in the efforts to aid victims of the fires and those helping to rebuild by sending several boxes of hand sanitizer to the Maui Strong Fund through a shipment organized by Bay Area International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) dockworkers. The Maui Strong Fund “provides financial resources to support the immediate and long-term recovery needs of the people and places affected by the devastating Maui wildfires.”

A photo shows stack of 11 boxes containing a total of 44 gallons of hand sanitizer sent to the victims of the Maui wildfires.

We encourage our community members who are able to donate and support the rebuilding efforts to do so. The recovery efforts require a range of donations to meet victims’ needs, and every donation helps.

Preparing for a Warming World through Climate Tech and Community Resilience

While the fires were devastating, they also served as a stark reminder of climate change's increasingly common threats to our shared home: Lahaina's experience reminds us of the urgent need to address climate-driven devastation and to do what we can to stave off the worst of climate change. This monumental effort requires governments, businesses, and individuals alike to prioritize long-term sustainability, not short-term gain.

Through innovative climate tech, LiquiDonate is doing its part by helping retailers keep billions of pounds of unsellable but perfectly good items out of landfills and move them into communities that need their items most. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those facing personal, systemic, and climate-driven challenges.
